Electromyography (EMG) & Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)
Electromyography and nerve conduction studies evaluate how muscles and peripheral nerves are functioning. These tests can help identify the location and severity of certain nerve problems and distinguish a nerve disorder from a muscle condition.
Bay Area Orthopaedics uses EMG and NCS results alongside the patient’s symptoms, physical examination, imaging, and other diagnostic information. Findings can help guide treatment for numbness, tingling, weakness, radiating pain, and suspected nerve compression or injury.

Preparing for Your Test
Wear loose clothing and keep the skin free of lotions or oils on the day of testing. Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medication, implanted electrical devices, bleeding disorders, or other relevant medical conditions. Mild temporary discomfort or bruising can occur.
